Cheyenne Young Warrior Buffalo Headdress c. 1870-
This is a fine original Cheyenne Native American Indian young warrior’s Buffalo Horn headdress dating to 1870's originally collected from the Wyoming Cheyenne Indians in 1885 by Reverend Joseph Ward. The piece was on display at the Yankton Indian College Museum in Yankton, South Dakota that Reverend Ward founded and was later sold at the museum deaccession sale in 1984 when the college permanently closed. The piece shows very good condition with minor drying of the Buffalo hide and cape trailer. Very few young warrior headdresses from the Plains tribes have been preserved, with few known authentic examples in museum or private collections. The piece comes with a custom display stand. The headdress is comprised of Buffalo hide cap with a long Buffalo hide trailer that hangs down the back 22 inches. The brow has been beaded and is accompanied by two beaded rosettes on each side, a possible later addition or repair, and old trade clothe strips with ribbons. There are two split Buffalo Bison horns with old dyed red horse tail strips and the original tie lace still intact between both horns, a truly classic addition. The back trailer or cape is somewhat dried from age and use. The headdress would have been worn by a young warrior perhaps 16-18 years of age. The piece is pictured int eh new 2020 book, “Rare American Indian Weapons Volume 2” by Mark Francis on page 46. Provenance: The piece was collected by Reverend Joseph Ward, displayed at the Yankton Indian College Museum in Yankton S.D. from 1885-1984, from the ex-collections of Ian West of England, Dr. Colin Taylor, Cyrus Eaton of London England and later the current collector.
