The lot features a tremendous Southern Plains War Tomahawk dating to circa 1870 attributed to the Cheyenne Native American Indians. The piece features an artful example with hand-forged head having a large four-point Cheyenne ancient Morningstar (morning-star) cut out in the center of the blade surrounded by eight additional copper inlaid circles. The head has a Missouri War Axe style, triangular-shaped design that measures 7 inches long by 3 inches wide across the bottom of the blade. The tomahawk blade also shows a rear-facing spur, a wonderful addition. The solid wood haft is adorned with old tarnished brass tacks and a long, frilly artful buckskin fringe drop. The gripping area finish has a worn patina from early age and use most likely from sweaty hands. The entire piece has a nice patina and shows the proper signs of age and use. The piece is from the astounding Jim Dresslar and Tom Hardy Collections. The tomahawk will be photographed and mentioned in the new book “Rare American Indian Weapons: Tomahawks, War Clubs & Knives” (2018) by Mark Francis on page 33. This is truly a wonderful authentic example showing fine patina and manufacture. Measures overall 20.5” L.
