This is an exceptional circa 1880 authentic Cheyenne Native American Indian pipe tomahawk with rare double cutouts. The piece was collected by Ted Jarvis’s grandfather from the Cheyenne in Wyoming. This is a large, heavy example measuring 22 inches in length and having a 10-inch-long head. The head is hand forged from gun barrel iron with some of the rifling still visible from inside the pipe bowl. The head also features a faceted lower ring on the bowl, forged molding, small chevrons, and a wide, thin triangular-shaped blade. The blade shows the two historic and important cutouts in the center having alternating hearts. A near identical example showing the two alternating heart cutouts is documented in the book “Tomahawks & Pipe Axes of the American Frontier” by John Baldwin, page 114 figure 287. The haft shows a solid wood construction with a nice dark patina and high polish along with an excellent brass trade tack design and a high relief-carved smoking tip with teeth marks, indicating use. There are less than 25 known authentic known examples of double cutout pipe tomahawks that exist in any private or museum collection, making this an immensely rare and historic piece. From the Ex-collection of Ted and Lilly Jarvis.
