Cheyenne Pictographic Dance Shield Depicting War
Cheyenne Pictographic Dance Shield Depicting Warriors on Horseback
Circa 1890
Diameter 16 in.

This late 19th century shield is composed of a thin rawhide base and a native tanned hide cover. The cover is painted with two mounted warriors, each wearing eagle feather bonnets with trailers, set against a yellow background. Below the central black horizon band is the image of a buffalo, painted in black against the blue green background. A red and navy blue wool cloth banner is tied to the rim in classic Plains fashion. The thin rawhide base together with the pictographic subjects clearly indicates that this is a dance shield from the reservation period.

Provenance
Collected by Charles Edward Mendenhall (1849-1937).
Skinners Auctioneers, Sale 2237, Lot 150, May 22, 2004.
