This is an interesting circa late 19th to early 20th hide society pouch flat bag with quilled and beaded design showing a Buffalo Head from the Cheyenne Native American Indians. The bag shows a flat square two piece Indian tanned hide with trade thread sewn edge and long hand cut Indian tanned hide fringe being adorned with a porcupine quilled Buffalo head along with linear porcupine design and beaded border. This is a nice transitional piece showing both quillwork and beadwork. The quillwork shows natural cream, brown and orange, all being natural dyes along with early glass trade seed beads in greasy yellow, Cheyenne pink and cobalt. There have been a few Buffalo head quilled society pouches over the years similar to this such as the two-example offered by Cowan’s in their September 2002 sale and the example in the Portland Art Museum. Provenance: From a historic Eastern Montana American Indian Collection, where the piece was found to be an authentic original, one of the finest collections of American Indian weaponry and antiquities in Montana. Measures 20”L with strap and fringe by 6.5”W.
