The lot features an authentic original American Indian Dag Knife attributed to the Cheyenne Native American Indians and dating to circa 1850. The dag knife features a flat, wide handle and hand-forged blade with a slight median ridge running down the center on both sides, an attribute found exclusively on early authentic 19th Century dags. The blade is secured to the carved wood haft with five copper pins and is artfully decorated with brass trade tack design at the hilt and pommel of both sides. One side of the handle has some unusual, crude linear scratches incised at the gripping area. The etched wood area gives the appearance of an overlapping braided like design, a unique addition. The blade shows a rich patina and the piece shows the correct wear for its early age and use. The knife is from the large collection of Cheyenne materials from the estate of Ted and Lilly Jarvis in Wyoming. The piece measures overall 13.25” L. These larger dag knives were made to be killing weapons, therefore dag knives show a clean long double-sided blade without any serration as they were for battle. Unlike other knives worn by Indian Warriors at the belt or waist, the dag knife would have been worn around the Indians neck on his chest.
