Pennsylvania, late 18th century, watercolor on ivory, unattributed. Portrait miniatures of Sophia Chew Philips and Henry Philips. Names of the sitters are engraved on verso along with the date, 1798 and Painted by Richard Cosway however, the artist attribution is believed to be incorrect. Pictured in Salons Colonial and Republican, Wharton, page 225. Housed in metal cases, one marked sterling on interior, each 3" high x 2.5" wide (sight).

Henry Philips (1767-1800) was the founder of Philipsburg, Pennsylvania. He came to America from England to open a branch office for the family's export-import business, it's headquarters were in Philadelphia and had accounts in major eastern cities. About 1795 the company began purchasing land, one of these areas of land in Pennsylvania is now Philipsburg. Henry was inducing pioneers to come settle there and about 1798 he built a saw mill and gristmill then afterwards he moved there himself.
