Chestnut Entrance Hall With Staircase & Fabulous Windows This lot is comprised of the main entrance hall to the house and includes the staircase, the stairway window, and all the paneling and trim below the staircase. The staircase is 44” wide and rises in three sections: the bottom landing rises one step to a right turn that rises up 12 treads to a second landing that turns right again for another 5 treads. In total the staircase goes up 11 feet. Note the fine quality of the spindles under the handrail and the beautiful gable-top newel post with the ice cream cone finial. There is rectangular raised chestnut paneling set at an angle to match the rise of the stairs, and this paneling returns along the second floor at the top of the stairs. In addition there is square raised chestnut paneling covering the wall below the rising staircase as well as the underside of the section of stairs that rises off the second landing. Note the doorway to the closet under the main rise of the staircase that includes fancy trim that matches the trim of the landing window. (See more notes below regarding other doors in the entry hall)
The stair case window is just fabulous. It has a strongly aesthetic design of leaves and vines that is asymmetrically bordered by Anglo Japanese inspired fans and sunbursts that are accentuated with large and small jewels. The glass is superior grade and is carefully cut and set to achieve a dramatic shaded effect that adds to the play of light. Beyond the beauty of the glasswork, the window trim is of a quality that is rarely seen. The 6” wide trim boards are reeded and embellished with a bead and reel motif down the center. The top of each trim board is finished off with a fabulous 4” crown block that features special moldings, a turned starburst, and even a little fretwork gallery.
The total size of the stairway window is 12’ 10” x 8’. The tall glass panels are about 7.5’ tall by 24”, and the panels below are 24” square.
This staircase and staircase window, including all the original trim and the raised paneling above and below the stairs, retains their original finish and are in mint condition. When combined into a single lot, these architectural delights become a one-of-kind opportunity to purchase for your home a dramatic and splendid installation that could only be achieved by designers and builders of yesteryear.
Note: the entrance hall has three doorways that lead to other rooms. These doors and doorways are not part of this lot but are offered in other lots.
