Autograph endorsement signed by Chester A. Arthur as Civil War General, dated 30 October 1862 from New York. Signed ''C.A. Arthur / Q M Genl.'' Here, Arthur forwards Major Rowland’s request to President Lincoln for quarters adapted for the drill by sharpshooters. The letter written mostly by Rowland reads in full, “The quarters desired by Major Rowland being beyond the limits of his state, his application therein within made is respectfully referred to the Commander-in-Chief. The quarters are the same occupied by Col. Berdan & are particularly well adapted for the drill & practice of sharp shooters. I think no harm can result from allowing Major Rowland to quarter his recruits there & recommend that his request be granted.” Docket portion of letter from Major Rowland. Date in pencil in unknown hand appears to be a tracing of faded ink date. 3.5” x 7.75” document has light wrinkling and spotting, overall very good.
