Nassua Bank bank check, 7.25 x 2.5, filled out in another hand and signed by Arthur, “C. A. Arthur,” payable to Thomas McMullen for $165.00, November 7, 1873. Check also bears a two-cent revenue stamp initialed by Arthur, “C. A. A., Nov 6, 1873.” Revenue stamps were issued by the government as as means to indicate that appropriate fees had been paid. During this time period, the fees were used to pay for various expenses in the aftermath of the Civil War. Archivally cloth matted and framed by the Gallery of History, with a copy of a Bachrach portrait, to an overall size of 15.5 x 21.5. Light vertical fold through a single letter of signature, cancellation cut to center, a bit of light creasing, and small bank stamp over signature, otherwise fine condition. The future twenty-first president was serving as Collector of the Port of New York when he signed this bank check. Although considered an honorable politician who was not corrupted by the lure of illegal activities during this period, historians maintain that he still staffed his office with more employees than were needed as a reward for their party loyalty.
