ALS signed “C. A. Arthur,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.75 x 5.75, September 9, 1878. Letter to D. J. Phelps, Deputy Collector. In full: “I enclose copy summons served upon me on the 3 ulto—Service was annulled by me on the original summons. Please attend attend [sic] to the matter & see that notice of appearance is duly served & oblige.” In very good condition, with moderate toning to first page and some scattered light creasing. In 1878 President Rutherford B. Hayes, who represented a different faction of the Republican party, sacked Arthur for various real and imagined abuses. In this letter, Arthur responds to a legal move connected with his ouster. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
