LS signed “C. A. Arthur,” three pages on two sheets, 8.25 x 13, June 1875. Letter to Attorney General Edwards Pierrepont inviting him to a dinner to be held in his honor, signed at the conclusion by over eighty members of the New York Bar Association. In part: “The undersigned…request your acceptance of a public dinner to be given you on occasion of your appointment to the position of Attorney General of the United States.” Arthur signs in the first column, and other notable signers include: Judge John R. Brady, who would swear Arthur in as president upon the death of James A. Garfield; John K. Porter, a prosecutor in the trial of Garfield assassin Charles Guiteau; William M. Evarts, former Chief Counsel for Andrew Johnson at his impeachment trial and future secretary of state; E. C. Benedict, a prominent banker and yachtsman; George H. Sharpe, a Union general and diplomat who investigated the assassination of Abraham Lincoln; diplomat Edwin W. Stoughton; and diplomat Joseph H. Choate. All of these notable figures have signed on the first page. Overall wear, creases, and soiling, otherwise fine condition. A unique piece rife with intriguing associations.
