<B>Chester A. Arthur, Secretarial Draft of Arthur's Proclamation Setting September 26, 1881 as the Date for the Burial of Assassinated President James A. Garfield.</B></I> Legal size, 8" x 13", two pages, fine appearance with minor imperfections. It begins "Whereas in His Inscrutable wisdom it has pleased God to remove from us the illustrious head of the Nation, James A. Garfield, late President of the United States…", and continues in flowery Victorian prose. He orders the Great Seal of the United States to be affixed, hence also signed (secretarially) by James G. Blaine, as secretary of state (an actually clipped signature of Blaine has been affixed below by a later collector). A fascinating historical artifact.
