Letter signed ''Chester A. Arthur'' as President. Dated 12 December 1881, letter is from the first few months of Arthur's presidency after his succession following the assassination of Garfield. Letter is addressed to a James E. Morrison, Esq. in New York City. Likely written in a secretarial hand, letter reads in full, ''I thank you cordially for your letter of the 10th instant...'' Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, which is not free franked and has had its stamp removed. Single-page letter on stationery embossed ''Washington'' measures 4.5'' x 7.75''. Mounted with tape at its edges to a mat below an engraving of Arthur to an overall size of 6.75'' x 15.75''. Light toning and folds, otherwise near fine.
