c1898 - This large ingot measures 19" x 9" x2", and weighs over 60 pounds. Debossed "Cherokee" in 2" letters. The lower right corner has a chip of approx. 2". It was discovered by metal detectorists in Montana near this turn of the century town. The Cherokee Smelting & Refining Co. of Cherryvale was active in the late 1890s. A related company, the Cherokee Zinc Co. had their offices at Weir, Kansas [Poole Bros. Directory, 1898]. This spectacular ingot was likely part of a shipment to a manufacturing plant in Montana and probably fell off the transport wagon (much to the delight of the draft animals). -62010
