This is an excellent authentic Mississippian Culture Period steatite large life size fish effigy pipe. The was recovered from the Illinois Kentucky Kincaid Mounds Historic Site area and is from circa 1050-1400 A.D. This is the largest and one of the finest pipe bowl effigy pieces from the Mississippian Native American Indian culture as it is a life size fish effigy. The piece appears to have the correct drill and carving marks typical of the time period. The piece has a chipped tail and small tail repair as shown, but overall is a very fine museum quality piece with excellent craftsmanship. The piece shows a 7/8” bowl that is 1.5” deep on the fish back with the mouth area or stem connection being found in between the fishes lips. Provenance: From a large Native American Indian artifact museum collection in France, was recovered in the Kentucky Kincaid Mounds area in the mid-20th century. Measures 11.75”L x 2.75”H x 2.5”D.
