Carroll, Charles. HANDWRITTEN CHECK ON THE FARMERS BANK OF MARYLAND SIGNED BY CHARLES CARROLL OF CARROLLTON. Dated July 2, 1814 and made out to Solomon Groves in the amount of $22.69. Approximately 20 by 7 cm on laid paper. Cut cancelled, mildly affecting signature; countersigned by Groves on the reverse. Very old folds; a couple pinholes. Still very nice. A nicely preserved check signed by this well-known signer of the Declaration of Independence. Charles Carroll of Carrollton (1737-1832) served on the Continental Congress as a member of the Board of War. The only Catholic to sign the Declaration of Independence, he was also the last to die, witnessing the 56th anniversary of the fourth of July. Ex F.C.C. Boyd collection; ex John J. Ford, Jr. collection (Stack's Ford Sale VI, lot 303).
