5 RARE CHECKS FROM MILLS OF THE COMSTOCK, 1874-1897: 1) Pacific Mill And Mining,(Morgan Mill lined out), 1880, RN-G1, signed by Patton. 2) Sacramento Mill, 1874, RN-D1, signed by James Fair. 3) Occidental Mill, 1874,RN-C21B, signed by James Fair. 4) Unused check, Brunswick Mill, 187-, RN-G1. 5) Ludwig Copper Mine, (Devil's Gate Mill lined out), 1897. History- "Devil's Gate Mill"- Erected in 1860 just below Devil's Gate. It had, 16 stamps. It was formerly known as the Washoe Mill. The "Ludwig Mine"-In 1885 John Ludwig worked the first major Copper Mine & erected a smelter on the western side of Mason Valley near Yerington, Nev.- "James Fair"- discovered the "Big Bonanza", on the Comstock Lode. In 1865 he became Super. of the Ophir Mine. In 1867 the Hale and Norcross hired him as Assistant Super. While at the H.&N. Mine Fair met John Mackay. The two formed an alliance. Fair or " Slippery Jim Fair" as some folks called him worked quietly with Mackay, James Flood & William O' Brien, in order to gain control of some of the major mines of the Comstock. Fair also served in the U.S. Senate from 1881-1887. He died in S.F. in 1891.City: Virginia CityCounty: State: NV
