Chavinoid Stirrup Spout Vessel: Head Mythical B
Stirrup-spout Vessel: Head of a Mythical Creature
Chavinoid
600 - 400 B.C.
Burnished gray ware, red pigment
Height 9 in.

The unusual and somewhat puzzling iconography of this vessel suggests that it is either provincial in origin or very late in the Chavín-influenced sequence. The burnished areas of the vessel body are filled with a boldly-incised fanged head with large three-part eyes below striations possibly intended as eye lashes. A cap-like head-covering, divided down the center, ends in two outward-projecting points. The rest of the head area is lightly textured. The vessel settled during firing, which causes it to rest crookedly. The entire body of the vessel has been rubbed with red pigment. Overall condition is good, with minor pitting on the vertical spout and a clay sample drill hole in the base.

Provenance
Bonhams & Butterfields, San Francisco: sale 7477E, 8 December 2003, Lot 3034 (p.15, ill., p.14)
