Stirrup-spout Vessel: Fanged Deity
Chavín
700 - 400 B.C.
Burnished dark gray ceramic
Height 8 1/2 in. Width 5 1/2 in.

This vessel exemplifies one Chavín-related mode of decoration: finely burnished dark gray surfaces are combined with matte textured areas and incised linear patterning. The full-formed vessel incorporates the frontal face of a fanged deity with wrinkled forehead, the latter along with the nose and ears shown in low relief. The full, short-spouted stirrup typical of Cupisnique-type vessels is seen here. The overall condition is good, with minor surface losses, and drilled indications that two clay samples were taken.

Provenance
Bonhams & Butterfields, San Francisco: sale 7477E, 8 December 2003, Lot 3035 (p.15, ill., p.14)
