Stirrup-spout Vessel
Chavín, Cupisnique
1000 - 600 B.C.
Burnished blackware
Height 9 1/2in. Width 8 11/16 in.

A complex plant form (possibly an achira [Canna edulis]) is represented in this stirrup-spout vessel, in which some details are modeled in full-round and some are hastily engraved after firing. Representations of plants important to ancient Peruvian societies appear as subjects of finely made stirrup-spout vessels from Chavín times on through the rest of north and central coast pre-Spanish history. Such continuity and prominence, along with the known status and ritual importance of the stirrup-spout type, indicate the continuing important place of plant representation in ritual and social contexts. The condition is good, with some minor crack restoration. Drill holes in the bottom indicate that clay samples were taken.

Provenance
David Bernstein, New York
