Chavín Ceramic Low Bowl with Incised Exterior
Low Bowl with Incised Exterior
Chavín
1000 - 600 B.C.
Burnished blackware with red pigment
Height 1 3/4 in. Diameter 7 5/8 in.

The deeply-incised exterior of this burnished blackware bowl is divided by double bands into four balanced fields, two larger and two smaller. The abutting dynamic, arrow-like large fields occupy the majority of the bottom and two outwardly sloped vessel sides. A complex profile monster occupies all four compartments, the two larger examples more fully developed and more easily readable. Head directions of the monsters alternate across the vessel, in each case at the broader end of the triangular compartment. The larger monster's head is comprised of squared-off elements, and includes prominent everted lips and a rectangular eye. Squared scrolls emanate from the mouth. Its smaller-sized body is formed of a highly conventionalized, downward-facing profile head with down-turned mouth and a forehead curl which also can be read as the tail of the profile monster. The smaller compartments read first as an angularly-stylized profile head facing toward the vessel's center, but the general configuration, eye placement, and a large curling shape below the head together strongly evoke a zoomorph seen in profile. This smaller head-form has a toothed, downturned mouth and squared eyes. The deeply-cut incising has resulted in broad sunken areas; these are filled with vermillion pigment. There are restored breaks, but all parts are original.

Provenance
David Bernstein, New York
