Chautauqua-The White 28 x 21 WWI Poster Chautauqua- The White.
Chautauqua- The White. 28" x 21" Artist: unsigned. This poster depicts a young doughboy holding an American flag, with a message from Woodrow Wilson below it. The message reads; "The work that Chautauqua is doing has not lost importance because of war, but rather has gained new opportunities for service. Let me express the hope that you will let no discouragement weaken your activities, and that the people will not fail in the support of a patriotic institution that may be said to be an integral part of the national defense." Chautauqua was an institution of the late 19th and early 20th centuries providing popular education combined with entertainment in the form of lectures, concerts, and plays often presented outdoors or in a tent. The first Chautauqua assembly was held near Lake Chautauqua, in southwestern New York State, and was conceived as a training center for Methodist Sunday School teachers. This poster commemorates their great organization, which helped move peace forward during the war. The condition is good; severe tears on top and bottom edges, corners are badly mangled and there is still tape present on some corners, burst tear in the text.
