Author (1871–1955) who was the second wife of Jack London. TLS, one page, 8.5 x 6.5, July 13, 1917. London writes an unknown recipient to decline an invitation. In part: “The reason of this inability to leave is, that I am engage to deliver my second book to The Macmillan Company by that date, and I am overworking terribly to get it in shape. I work many hours a day, AND Sundays, and often evenings. I am getting brain-fag; but I must keep at it until it is finished…So it was YOU who were responsible for Mr. Roosevelt reading my book! I wondered, thought it must have been Sonya Levien, Assistant Editor of METROPOLITAN, who likes the book greatly. I had written Mr. Roosevelt about something, and in his reply he mentioned my stuff…Since Jack died I have been reading all the short stories your wonderful husband gave us; had been waiting for the right opportunity…Some day we shall all get together—all but Jack—auwe!” In very good condition, with intersecting folds, light toning, and a staple hole at the top edge. Great references to the legendary author by his widow just a year after his passing.
