<B><I>Charlotte Cushman</B></I>,</B></I> <B>Legendary American Actress, 1916 Cigar Label.</B></I> An absolutely stunning lithographed 10" x 6.25" embossed inner label with gold decorative trim. Cushman, born in 1816, was the premiere American tragedian of her day, admired for her remarkable talent and ability to play both male and female roles with equal aplomb. This label features a fine portrait in the center with two slightly smaller scenes from roles for which she was known: Lady Macbeth from Shakespeare's <I>Macbeth</B></I> and Meg Merriles from Sir Walter Scott's <I>Guy Mannerling.</B></I> Her personal life was at times chaotic due to her multiple, and sometimes simultaneous, lesbian affairs. She died of breast cancer in 1876, but not before a grand farewell performance tour where parades, torchlight processions, fireworks, and the adoration of thousands of fans greeted her.
