Original Charlie McCarthy composition ventriloquist doll by Effanbee. The 20? tuxedoed doll retains its monocle, has a replacement hat, but its original hat pin. The rubber band which operates the mouth does not work. Doll comes with the bottom of its original box which retains its original end label. In fine condition, with a bit of scattered light crazing to face. Effenbee, a trade name of Fleischaker & Baum, doll-makers in New York, produced its first Charlie McCarthy doll in 1937, modelled after the dummy used by popular ventriloquist Edgar Bergen. The doll was a hit, and several different versions were made over four decades.
