English comic actor Charlie Chaplin was one of the most influential individuals during the silent film era.

At the first ever Academy Awards ceremony in 1929, Chaplin was given the Honorary Award "For versatility and genius in acting, writing, directing and producing The Circus".

In 1970, Chaplin received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and in 1975 he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II as Knight Commander of the British Empire.

One of Chaplin's best loved characters is known as 'The Tramp', a vagrant with the manners of a gentleman.

Description & provenance

This black and white vintage autographed photograph shows Chaplin laughing in his famous Tramp costume.

Chaplin has autograpped and inscribed the 5" x 7" photograph "To my friend Frank, from Charlie Chaplin".

Frank Traughber worked as Chaplin's office boy from 1919-1920, during which time helped answer Chaplin's fan mail and claims that he signed around 100 autographs a day on Chaplin's behalf. The genuine autographed photograph is accompanied by a letter from Traughber to Chaplin recalling some interesting experiences from the times they worked together.

Both the photograph and the autograph are in excellent condition.

Rarity

Signed photographs of Chaplin in his 'Tramp' costume are much more sought after than other photographs of Chaplin as the Tramp character is his most famous role.

According to the PFC40 Autograph Index, signed photographs of the silent movie star have increased in value by 216% in the last 11 years.

A wonderful signature on a fine vintage photograph.
