Charleville Model 1777 Flintlock Musketoon, .69 cal., 29'' barrel with two steel bands, walnut stock with cheekrest cut into left side of butt, steel flashpan, and triggerguard with finger ridges. Right side of buttstock, about 3'' forward of buttplate, shows cartouched hole of approx. 1/2'' dia., similar to examples on display at the Ft. Ticonderoga Museum. It was believed that French soldiers during the French & Indian Wars, and later during the American Revolution, would remove a piece of wood from their musket and have it blessed by a priest. These late model Charlevilles were typically used by French soldiers on American soil, such as those under the command of Gen. Rochambeau. Many remained in the northeast after the cessation of hostilities. Lock marked ''Manufre Royale de St. Etienne'', with eagle-''M'' proofmarks. Upper tang marked ''M1777'' and ''72''. Condition is fine as modified with a nice professional period shortening; ramrod has been shortened as well. Moderate carbon spotting to barrel and lock. Minor scuffs and dings to stock. Action functions as designed, bore shows light corrosion. Est.: $800-$1,200. (Antique)
