Charleston Light Dragoon Parade Dress Helmet, ca. 1835-1840, leather helmet body, stamped brass eagle's head helmet comb, brim, chinstrap and eagle plate, with blond horsehair plume. There are two types extant in museums: this early type pre-dating the Civil War, and the later type that omits the eaglehead and replaces it with a star. The Charleston Light Dragoons were organized in 1730, and they existed in the Charleston, SC community for many generations. Until the Civil War, they were primarily a parade organization made up of yeomanry, gentry, and South-quasi aristocrats who joined the Confederacy in March 1862, assigned to Gen. Hood's Cavalry, and were blooded at Beaufort, SC, Hawe's Shop, VA, and again at Bentonville, NC (March 19, 1865), finally surrendering there to Northern forces April 26, 1965. It is interesting to note that in 1733 Samuel Prioleau was Captain, and some 13 decades later during the Civil War, two of his blood relatives fought gallantly under the same colors. Condition is fine showing minor separation at back of comb and base of brim (easily repaired). Blank hole above Federal eagle for rosette. Sweatband is mostly present. Green paint on bottom of visor with light flakes and scuffs. Est.: $2,000-$3,000.
