This Charles of the Ritz rouge compact is very chic! It is circa 1930s-1940s.<p>
The compact is round and in a black and gold metal case with a circle design on the top. The bottom of the compact shows a label with "Coral" as well as the Charles of the Ritz mark.<p>
The compact measures 1 1/2 in diameter and 1/2-inch thick. It has a hinged lid and a puff with the Charles of the Ritz mark with a full pot of rouge! It is in excellent condition!<p>

(For a bit of history: From the American Popular Culture website's excellent article on decorative compacts ("About Face: The Emergence, Evolution, and Demise of the Decorative Compact") by Deirdre Clemente, we learn that the decorative compact--as the wonderful antique and vintage compacts currently sought by collectors are called--dominated the first half of the 20th century.<p>

The decorative compact, most often made of metal, was made in a variety of elaborate shapes. Compacts first came onto the fashion scene in the early 1900s, were at their peak in the 1920s and 1930s, and were phased out by the mid-1950s, at which time the plastic compacts we have now took over.<p>

Clemente remarks that decorative compacts were made of metal and "had the look of craft about them". For a woman of the time, the style of her compact was as important as her access to the face powder and lipstick that it carried.
