Charles Vyse Colorway Figurine, The Madonna of the Racecourse
This hand-painted figure portrays a mother holding her child, dressed in brightly colored garments with a patterned skirt, orange jacket, and purple headscarf. The child is wrapped in a detailed shawl and wears a green head covering. The figurine stands on a square base with a green floral ground pattern. The base is marked underneath with the impressed and painted Chelsea mark reading "C.V. CHELSEA 1927," denoting its creation at the Chelsea Pottery in London. This particular piece draws inspiration from the Epsom Racecourse, renowned for the Derby meeting held in June, and represents Vyse's exploration of working-class and Romani themes in his ceramic portraiture. The piece features a vent hole through the base and exhibits fine crackling throughout the glaze, consistent with age.
