American politician (1811–1874) best known as a radical Republican and a staunch opponent of slavery. On May 22, 1856, Sumner was famously assaulted and severely beaten in the Senate chamber by South Carolina Congressman Preston Brook. Sumner’s injuries were so severe that he was unable to attend sessions of Congress for the next three years. ALS, one page, 4.5 x 7.25, July 8, 1859. Sumner writes to “Chase”—Salmon P. Chase, then-governor of Ohio and future chief justice of the US Supreme Court. In full: “Should Lord Altaps who takes this note meet you any where in his American wanderings, I wish to command him to your kind attention.” In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope addressed and franked by Sumner.
