Civil War–dated LS, one page, 5 x 8, December 26, 1864. Letter to General J. W. Phelps in Brattleboro, Vermont. In full: “I feel most profoundly the difficulties of the admission of Louisiana. Not an arrival from New Orleans without its letters of protest from the truest men in the state. If it is admitted it will be under the pressure of necessity, and as a compromise; as in a storm part of the valuable freight is sacrificed for the rest so we may be compelled to sacrifice Louisiana for the sake of establishing a satisfactory system of reconstruction for her sister states—under Presidential pressure.” Intersecting folds (one vertical fold passing between letters of the signature) and toning to borders (affecting most of the signature), otherwise fine condition. A fascinating letter written as the federal government contemplated the restoration of the Union.
