American politician (1811–1874) and Massachusetts senator best known as a radical Republican and a staunch opponent of slavery. In 1856, Sumner was severely beaten in the Senate chamber by South Carolina Congressman Preston Brooks. Bold AQS on an off-white 5 x 6.5 sheet, signed at the conclusion, “Charles Sumner, Washington, 6th Feb. ’58.” Sumner pens a biblical verse from Matthew 5:9, in full: “Blessed are the peacemakers.” Two horizontal folds, light soiling, and a bit of show-through at corners from mounting remnants to reverse, otherwise fine condition.
