ALS, one page both sides, 5 x 8, Washington, March 19, 1856. Letter of introduction to Robert Ingham, a member of the British parliament. In part: “John G. Palfrey, formerly a distinguished member of Congress from my state…visits England now to obtain access to your public offices, in order to draw out materials for a history of New England on which he is now occupied.” A puncture to the top portion of the letter, affecting the opening and one word on the reverse, otherwise fine condition. The first volume of Palfrey’s work, entitled History of New England to the Revolutionary War, was published in 1859, and continued on to a total of five volumes.
