ALS, two pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, Boston, July 30, 1869. Letter to a young man seeking an appointment to West Point. In full: “I understand that all appointments to West Point for the present year have been made. The Presd’t appoints the sons of those who have fallen in the war. I see no chance for you, except through yr rep’tive, who, I doubt not, would take yr case with consideration. Senators have no power to appoint cadets.” In fine condition, with mild scattered creases and toning, and staple holes to the upper left corner.
