Charles Sumner (1811–1874) is best known as the leader of the antislavery forces in Massachusetts and a Radical Republican leader in the U.S. Senate during the Civil War and Reconstruction. He is famous for his passionate advocacy for civil rights, his role in the 1856 "Crime Against Kansas" speech, and being brutally caned on the Senate floor by a pro-slavery congressman. He autographed this photo on the front. It was taken in Washington DC by JF Jarvis.
