LS, two pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 7.75, January 4, 1872. Addressed from the Senate Chamber, a letter to Boston architect Theodore Voelkers, in full: "It is now understood here that a fleet is being fitted out at the Portsmouth, NH Navy Yard for Brazilian Waters, to which an admiral and several other officers of high rank are yet to be assigned, to each of whom, clerks, of their own selection, will be allowed. If your young friend watches the papers, he will learn who these officers are, and if he makes application direct to them, he may obtain the employment for which he is seeking." In fine condition, with a line of adhesive remnants to back of second page.
