English Particular Baptist preacher and author (1834–1892) known for his powerful sermons as the pastor of the congregation of the New Park Street Chapel; he helped popularize the phrase 'What would Jesus do?' ALS signed “C. H. Spurgeon,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 7.75, May 21. Letter to Mr. Sheldon, in part: "I am very much surprised that no remittances come from you when I am told on all hands that the sermons have had & still have a very large sale. I sent out by post three or four full early copies of Morning by Morning but have not received a cent. I have never pressed you for money, but have put implicit trust in your honour, & when money has come I have laid it out in the Lord's work every farthing of it. I now feel quite disheartened & am debating whether to accept a liberal offer from another publisher or to go in with the sermons from our own plates to be issued by my London publishers who want to open a house in New York. I did my best to help you against the Waverley, & for some time your house treated me well but I cannot comprehend the stoppage of all payments for so long a time." In very good to fine condition, with some staining and foxing, and a small area of paper loss which touches a few words of text but doesn't affect readability.
