Original hand-inked four-panel Peanuts daily comic strip, dated May 19, 1971, on a 27.5 x 6 off-white sheet of artist’s cardstock. Strip depicts Snoopy sitting atop his doghouse apparently suffering from writer’s block. Signed vertically in the last panel, “Schulz.” Archivally double matted and framed to an overall size of 34.25 x 12.5. In fine condition, with a uniform shade of mild toning (slightly heavier toning along edges has been tastefully matted out), usual central fold, and a bit of soiling in the second frame.

By the 1960s, Schulz’s strip began to incorporate Snoopy into more story lines, with many strips revolving around the dog’s active fantasy life—much to the bewilderment of Charlie Brown and friends. By 1971, Peanuts had 100 million readers, all of whom followed Snoopy’s crusade to write The Great American Novel. Alas, he never got much farther than the canonical phrase “It was a dark and stormy night...” as the writer’s block, present here, or a hapless editor or publisher derailed his plans.
