Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928)...
Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928) A stained pine cabinet, designed for Scotland Street School, Glasgow, circa 1905, the rectangular top with chamfered edge above one long and two short drawers, each with pierced crescent-shaped handles with brass backing, over three panelled doors, enclosing shelves on stile supports 155cm wide, 138cm high, 45.5cm deep Note: The School Board of Glasgow probably commissioned these cabinets from the architects Honeyman Keppie Mackintosh in 1904. There are two sets of drawings for the school dated 1903 and 1904, although neither shows details of the interior. Six of the cabinets remain in situ and are matched to the dresser in the Cookery Room, particularly with respect to the panelling and handle detailing. The cabinets were presumably commissioned at the same time as this dresser, which is built into the fabric of the building. The School Board had strict regulations as to numbers of drawers and doors required for cabinets of this nature, which were design to hold classroom effects. The design of the cabinets reflect these stipulations £3,000-4,000
