Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928) A green painted Windsor chair, designed for the Dutch Kitchen, Argyle Street Tearooms, Glasgow, 1906, the later inscribed top rail above a slatted back on moulded seat and turned tapering legs united by stretchers 35.5cm wide, 73cm high Ref: Roger Billcliffe Charles Rennie Mackintosh, The Complete Furniture, Furniture Drawings and Interior Designs, 1st Edition, Guilford, 1979 page 191(ill.) 1906.18 Note: This chair was donated to the Glasgow 'Ours' Club by the secretary' as was their tradition, and the top rail is carved 'Secretary's chair, Ours' accordingly. 'From a communication received from Mr Charles Clarke, 8 Bankside Avenue, Johnstone, it appears that, meeting Mr William Sloan in Glasgow towards the end of 1871, he suggested the desirability of forming a Club or Society for the study of Philology or cognate subjects. These gentlemen being schoolmasters, the suggestion was met with hearty approval from their scholastic friends and thus the Club was instituted in 1871 with Mr William Sloan as President and Mr Clarke as Secretary. The name they gave themselves at first was 'The Philological Society of Glasgow', but, even in the first session, this was found too cumbrous and perhaps somewhat pretentious, and on the suggestion of Mr Clarke the name was changed to that we all love, viz: 'OURS'.' £1,200-1,800
