Russell (1864-1926) was an accomplished artist in many ways-as a painter, sculptor, and illustrator, and also as a gifted storyteller. His ‘paper talk,' or illustrated letters, gave free rein to both his verbal and visual talents, and those fortunate enough to receive a Russell letter treasured it. Will Rogers, in his introduction to Good Medicine (1929), the first collection of the artist's illustrated letters, noted that his longtime friend held a unique place as an artist and writer: ‘I hope everybody that reads some of his thoughts here will get a little aid on life's journey by seeing how it's possible to go through life living and let live. He not only left us great living pictures of what our West was, but he left us an example of how to live in friendship with all mankind'" (Foreword).

"Where Good Medicine contained 115 separate items, some multipaged, Paper Talk about 84, and ‘Paper Talk' 98, along with vignettes from additional letters, this volume features 331 examples of Russell paper talk, photographically reproduced, and a checklist of all other known items" (Introduction).

Shipping: Books & Catalogs (view shipping information)
