Charles M. Russell Watercolours, Four Seasons
For your consideration are these Charles M. Russell Watercolor Prints, "Four Seasons", 1899, framed. The watercolors reflect Northern Plains People's beliefs that life is cyclical. Each season vignette has a season descriptor below it: Spring, "With the sun rising in the east, the Spring of the year is represented by a youth giving thanks for natures bounty. The young Indian is filled with promise as is the new growth of plants and the young animals which will sustain life."; Summer, "With the sun overhead in Summer it is time to reflect on the bounties of life. The warmer Summer months are when living is most active. It is a time for moving camp, hunting, war, and, as the maiden is dreaming, love."; Autumn, "The sun setting in the west, and the Indian in the Autumn of his life reflects on his accomplishments and what is still to be done. Autumn is also a time for preparation as herds of buffalo are hunted and meat and hides are prepared for the coming winter."; Winter, "The sun has set on Winter and life is difficult. The aged Indian prepares for his end as the wolves and owls are harbingers of impending doom. While this Indian might be looking toward the end of his days, he knows that the sun will come again in the Spring and that for another youth and life will be bountiful."
Charles Marion Russell (1864-1926) was many things: consummate Westerner, historian, advocate of the Northern Plains Indians, cowboy, outdoorsman, writer, philosopher, environmentalist, conservationist, and not least, artist. Charlie Russell completed approximately 4,000 works of art during his lifetime. He was the first "Western" artist to live the majority of his life in the West. For this reason, Charlie knew his subject matter intimately, setting the standard for many western artists to follow. These framed watercolor prints are in very nice condition, no marring observed. The rustic double matted hardwood frame is in very nice condition, slight scuffing noted to frame edges, no other obvious marring noted. The frame measures 34"L x 12"W x .75"D approximately.*
