Charles M. Russell Illustrated ALS
"WINNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED AFTER THE AUCTION ENDS BY THE AUCTIONEER ONCE ALL BIDS HAVE BEEN PROCESSED TO DETERMINE THE WINNER FOR EACH LOT."
American West artist Charles Marion Russell autograph letter signed with original watercolor illustrations. Artwork spans entire length of letter and depicts five bison against a mountainscape background. Below, Russell writes, ''Friend Bob / I received your letter and was glad to here [sic] from you. I was thinking of you and wanted to get in touch. I've been working plenty and getting ready to go fishin [sic] / I hear there's plenty of fish out there. Come on out / CM Russell''. Russell includes a tiny bison skull drawing beneath his signature on the letter. Datelined Great Falls, MT, 23 Oct. 1909. Several anthologies of Russell's illustrated letters have been published; this letter typifies Russell's correspondences: detailed drawings accompany strikingly simple verbiage. Envelope addressed to ''Bob Hawk / Route 56 / Killeen, TX'' is stamped, postmarked 25 Oct. 1909, Great Falls, Montana, and bears an illustration of five bison (positioned differently than those on the stationery and rendered without mountain background.) Return address reads only ''CM Russell'', beneath a rendition of the iconic Western bison skull. Third item in the lot is a 1956 letter from Niels MacDonald, an art appraiser in Tulsa, OK. MacDonald writes, ''…I am very interested in your Charles M. Russell letter. It is a very fine example of his illustration work. The Buffalos are very beautiful…We would like to make you an offer…''. Measuring 8'' x 9,'' Russell's single page letter shows some toning and creasing and has a small tear at the bottom, else very good condition. Envelope is an interesting texture, measures 4.25'' x 9.5'' and has separated at the top, else very good condition. Appraiser letter measures 8.5'' x 11'' and is in very good condition.
