Charles M. Reed Civil War Era Letter With Political Content. Three pages, 5” x 8”, New York, July 28, 1864, to the Honorable Daniel Marcy Congressman from New Hampshire). In this letter Charles Manning Reed, a former Congressman from Pennsylvania, compliments Marcy on a recent address that he made and also expresses his desire that New Hampshire “the Old Granite State may yet return and resume her place with other bright constellations in the proud and defiant Column of Democratic States.” Reed also inquires “Does Gen. Geo B. McLellan sic stand favorably with Your Delegation for the Presidency. We must have a man who will sweep the present incumbent & his minions from power, for the Union is Sacred & must be preserved”. This letter provides a fine record of the election of 1864 and the Democratic attempts to unseat Lincoln. The letter is uniformly toned with age and has the usual fold marks, else very good condition.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
