Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (writing as Lewis Carroll) - Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Second Ameri
Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (writing as Lewis Carroll) - Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Second American Edition, 1870, Boston: Lee and Shepard. Quarto, burgundy library binding with gilt-stamped spine. Condition: Good, with loose front and back hinges, some soiling/staining and edge tears throughout. 42 Illustrations by John Tenniel, a few of which have had amateur watercoloring applied to them. Written in 1865 after an afternoon's boat trip with the author, a companion, and three young girls (one of whom, Alice Pleasance Liddell, became the titular heroine), this beloved work of children's literature has earned its well-deserved classic status. Fraught with puns, anagrams, satire, and inspired nonsense, Dodgson's Wonderland is a magical place that has served as the basis for countless stage plays, movies, TV shows, songs and stories throughout the years. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was first published in 1866. That first edition, of which only 22 copies are known to exist, is quite prized by collectors. In 1998, one of the few copies held in private hands (17 of the known 22 reside in permanent library collections) realized a staggering $1.5 million at auction. The book was first published in America in 1869, with sales strong enough to warrant a second printing the following year. interestingly, it seems that the second American edition is harder to find today than the first. The copy offered here will make an affordable addition to any Alice-aficionado's library.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
