TLS signed “Charles A. Lindbergh,” one thin onionskin page, 8.5 x 11, August 7, 1969. Letter to Mrs. Margaret K. Thompson. In full: “I receive the copy of your July 18th letter on arriving at my wife’s chalet in Switzerland, via the West Coast, Hawaii, and the Philippines. I am sorry about the lateness of this reply.

The Apollo XI launching was, of course, extremely interesting, and for me very enjoyable—no crush of people; I watched the launching from an open area about three miles away, assigned to astronauts and their families. Of course traffic on the roads was pretty jammed after the show was over.

It was a wonderful experience for me to view the filmstrips in your studio. I felt they demonstrated really great art, both in the selection and the placing of the photographs—as well as in the techniques used to bring out the basic qualities of the photographs themselves. My appreciation and congratulations go to you and to everyone concerned.

I will be delighted if my suggestions prove to be of value; but please do not incorporate any with which you do not agree. It is only too easy to make suggestions when one doesn’t have the responsibility of incorporating them into a final product.

In regard to nature and conservation magazines, I’m afraid I don’t know enough about them to be of help. The first sort-of-nature magazine that comes to my mind is our good old friend the National Geographic! People who subscribe to it must like to look at pictures. Then there is the Audubon Society’s magazine. But surely you know about such publications much better than I do. I should think you would be wanting to reach groups rather than individuals. What about the Garden Club groups? Do they have a publication? I should think they’d be about ready to expand their interests? I’m afraid I’m not being of much help.

Many thanks for sending the catalogue. My wife and I have gone through them with much interest. They give an excellent idea of your activities. It seems to me the system of education you are building up holds tremendous possibilities.

No rush at all about returning the New York Times photographs.

Should anything turn up, I plan to be in Europe long enough to receive a return airmail letter. But it’s a good precaution always to send a copy to Scotts Cove.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds (one vertical fold passing through a single letter of the signature) and light wrinkles. With the pilot of the first transatlantic flight discussing his observation of man’s first flight to the surface of the moon, this highly desirable letter represents a fantastic connection between aeronautic milestones.
