Commemorative cover, 6.5 x 3.75, with an April 15, 1926, cancellation honoring the First Flight Inaugurating Contract Air Mail, signed at the lower left corner in ink “C. A. Lindbergh, Pilot.” Light wrinkling, toning, and a few ink spots, otherwise fine condition. During this historic St. Louis-to-Chicago route, Lindbergh twice exhibited the heroism and quick-thinking nature that would serve him well on his famed transatlantic flight a year later. As one of the pilots who traveled the air in Contract Air Mail Route No 2, he was forced to bail out from his mail aircraft as it began to plummet toward the ground. Despite this—and without proper equipment and landing facilities—Lindbergh recorded a 99% airmail delivery efficiency. It was during one of the long lonely flights commemorated in this cover that Lindy decided to compete for a $25,000 prize for the first non-stop flight from New York to Paris...a decision that would cement his place in history.
