French musical composer (1832–1918) best-known for La fille de Madame Angot. ALS in French, signed “Ch. Lecocq,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, personal letterhead, February 3, 1884. Letter to an aspiring composer or librettist. In part (translated): “It seems to me a work of this sort would strike a new note which one might be tempted to risk, if only one could find a director sufficiently intelligent to dare climb out of the rut in which operetta has steeped itself. To what extent the operetta would have to be reworked is something I would not be able to tell you; nor can I tell the theatre where it would have a chance of being performed. The fairylike and poetic aspect of this work seems to me to go beyond the framework of the theatres especially devoted to operetta.” In fine condition, with mild creases and soiling.
